Olhão, One of the Algarve’s Hidden Gems, Is a Land of Mystery Where Legends and Traditions Intertwine Through the Centuries
Rich in history and culture, this charming town captivates all who visit, revealing stories that have stood the test of time.
Passed down from generation to generation, these legends not only enrich the local identity but also make Olhão an irresistible destination for those seeking more than just stunning beaches and exceptional cuisine.
The Path of Legends in Olhão
For those looking to dive into the mythology and traditions of this fishing town, the “Path of Legends” is a walking route through the historic center of Olhão that reveals the tales that helped shape the town’s culture.
Among the many legends celebrated along the way, some of the most iconic include:
The Legend of Marim
In Largo da Fábrica Velha, you’ll find the story of the Legend of Marim. It is said that Alina, a young woman living in a luxurious palace in Marim, fell in love with Abdalá, a troubadour. Alina’s father disapproved of the romance and challenged Abdalá to bring a distant spring to the palace in one single night, promising Alina’s hand if he succeeded.
Abdalá set off deep in thought. Her father, feeling assured, believed he had finally separated them for good.
But with the help of magical forces, Abdalá completed the challenge. Furious, Alina’s father threw her out the window. She fell beside Abdalá, and together they vanished down the stream.
The Legend of Floripes
In Praça Patrão Joaquim Lopes stands a tribute to the Legend of Floripes. The tale tells of Floripes, an enchanted Moorish woman who wanders the streets of Olhão each night, casting spells on fishermen and luring them into trying to break the curse that binds her.
Sadly, those who fall under her spell are never seen again, disappearing into the sea. To this day, people believe a beautiful woman dressed in white continues to appear under the cover of night.
The Legend of the Enchanted Moor
At Largo do Gaibéu, the Legend of the Enchanted Moor is brought to life. A young fisherman named Manuel Caleça was playing with friends when a stranger approached and asked to join. Though welcomed, the stranger wasn’t very good at the games, prompting a remark from Manuel.
In response, the boy invited Manuel to play somewhere else.
They arrived at a secret location where the stranger revealed a hidden trapdoor leading to a magnificent underground palace filled with treasure.
The boy explained he was under a spell and promised to accompany Manuel throughout his life—visible only to him.
For years, Manuel felt his mysterious friend’s presence guiding and protecting him. But everything changed the day his mother brought him to church to receive communion and confess. From that moment, the boy vanished forever.
The Legend of Arraul
In Largo João da Carma, we find the Legend of Arraul—one of the region’s most captivating. According to tradition, Arraul was the son of the guardian of the mythical Pillars of Hercules and the sole survivor of Atlantis. One day, a violent storm swept him into the deep sea, where he was swallowed by a giant whale.
Rather than meeting his end, Arraul was carried ashore at a place called Prainhas—the legendary birthplace of Olhão.
Struck by its beauty, he vowed to protect it, building a massive sand barrier using soil from the nearby São Miguel and Cabeça hills. This is how the Barrier Islands of the Ria Formosa were born—protecting Olhão from the sea to this day.
The Legend of the Big-Eyed Boy
In Largo do Carolas, the mysterious Legend of the Big-Eyed Boy lives on. On dark nights, especially near the Barreta district, fishermen reported sightings of a chubby boy wearing only a shirt, with large, piercing eyes. He would cry constantly without uttering a single word.
Moved by pity, fishermen would try to pick him up, but as they carried him, he became unbearably heavy, forcing them to put him down. The boy continued to appear for years, always in Barreta—sparking fear and fascination.
One day, he disappeared for good. It’s said that Floripes, as she left for North Africa, took him with her—bringing an end to yet another of Olhão’s many mysteries.
Villa Alvor Domus: A Sensory Experience
Just as Olhão’s legends have stood the test of time, Villa Alvor Domus keeps the Algarve’s winemaking heritage alive.
“Domus” comes from Latin and means “home.” In Roman times, a Domus was where guests were welcomed with the very best—a spirit Villa Alvor seeks to replicate by sharing the finest expression of its terroir.
Crafted from Verdelho and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, this wine offers fresh aromas of peach, green pear, and delicate floral notes. It’s the ideal companion for exploring the legends and charms of this remarkable land.
A true expression of the Algarve’s authenticity, the grapes grow in clay-limestone soils and are vinified at low temperatures to preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. A four-month aging period in used French oak barrels adds balance and elegance, resulting in a perfectly integrated bouquet.
With vibrant acidity and a refreshing finish, this wine pairs beautifully with seafood, fish dishes, and salads. It also has excellent aging potential, allowing its character to evolve gracefully over time.
