Five suggestions for celebrating the “Santos Populares” in the Algarve

In June, the places are decorated with colour, music, and entertainment to welcome the “Santos Populares” (Popular Saints).

Santo António, São João and São Pedro are celebrated in the Algarve with religious festivals, popular parades and festivals that revive traditions and memories.

PORTIMÃO:

Organised by the Municipality of Portimão, in conjunction with the Parish Councils of Portimão, Alvor and Mexilhoeira Grande and the communities involved, the festivities around the “Santos Populares” are a calling card of this municipality.

LAGOS:

From the 10th to the 12th of June, Praça do Infante will be the stage for a festival with traditional food, lively dances and a wide range of local and guest marching parades.

OLHÃO:

The Parish Councils of Moncarapacho and Fuseta will celebrate, respectively, the “Santos Populares” on the 10th and 23rd of June. Among other initiatives, these festivities will include performances by the March of the Senior University of the Casa do Povo de Moncarapacho.

FARO:

The high point of the festivities takes place in Praça da Pontinha, on the weekend around “São João” Day (24th of June), with a parade of popular march groups from various parts of the Algarve region.

LAGOA:

Carvoeiro Beach will be filled with colour and joy on the 24th of June, with a festival at the amphitheatre and square of the Ermida da Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, one of the most beautiful views in the municipality of Lagoa. This event, which will include snacks and sardines, is free of charge. All the details can be found on the website of the Parish Councils of Lagoa and Carvoeiro.
